State Personnel Office Celebrates Women’s History Month
March is Women’s History Month, and the State Personnel Office is celebrating by releasing a new educational opportunity available on the SHARE Enterprise Learning Management (ELM) system: an eLearning course called “Women’s History Month: New Mexico Historic Women Markers” (course code SoNM-1967). This course, available for completion on a voluntary basis, provides an opportunity to learn more about some significant achievements of New Mexican women, and how they have helped shape the past, present, and future of our beloved state. Here are just some of the fascinating stories of New Mexico’s women that you’ll find in the course:
- Annie Dodge Wauneka – Diné tribal leader and public health pioneer who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom
- Elizabeth Gutiérrez Garrett – Musician and educator, blind from childhood, who wrote the New Mexico State Song
- Esther Martinez – Named a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment of the Arts for her work on preservation of the Tewa language
- Dr. Meta L. Christy – Recognized by the American Osteopathic Association as the first Black osteopath
- Soledad Chávez Chacón – The first Hispanic woman to hold statewide office in the U.S.
